Geneviève Van der Wielen

Geneviève Van der Wielen was born in 1954, inVerviers, the second largest city in the Liege Province.

Born from a bourgeois family, she had a strict upbringing, protected from deleterious influences of the outside world.

In 1972 she joins the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts Saint Luc of Liege, where she graduates in 1975.

She practices monotype and copies icons. Monotype is a technique that does not allow for mistakes, and she acquires herewith a sure and fluid drawing. Since then Geneviève Van der Wielen draws by instinct, free-hand, without any model.
A few years later, in 1978, she obtains the Darchis Scholarship, offering her the possibility of staying three months in Rome. The journey to Italy of the Romantics.

In 1980 she decides to travel around the world. She will come back with lots of images and iconographic themes.

Soon after the return from this trip, with the painting "La Gourmandise", she will reach the maturity of her style and of her inspiration, well established by now.

Geneviève Van der Wielen refuses any belonging to any school or to any artistic movement. She keeps on her own progression, in total independence, being faithful only to herself.
